Reverse description The reverse depicts an evocative scene commemorating the Bois du Cazier mining disaster of 1956, featuring the silhouette of the colliery's characteristic industrial headframes and associated mining buildings rendered in detailed relief. Superimposed upon the architectural composition is a powerful portrait bust of a miner, inspired by the sculptural work of Belgian artist Constantin Meunier, whose imagery also informed the historic 20 and 50 Belgian centime coinage. The design serves as a solemn tribute to the victims of the catastrophic fire of 8 August 1956, in which 262 miners perished. The commemorative legend 'BOIS DU CAZIER 1956-2006' is inscribed across the field, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the tragedy.
