Part of Italy's long-running regional series celebrating the twenty administrative regions, this Abruzzo issue was released in 2009 under the collector program administered by IPZS. The series as a whole ran across multiple years in the 2000s, with individual regional coins timed loosely to cultural or promotional events — Abruzzo's edition coincided roughly with recovery efforts following the devastating L'Aquila earthquake of April 2009, which killed over 300 people and severely damaged the region's medieval architectural heritage.
Mintage for issues in this series was tightly controlled, with most regional pieces struck in the low tens of thousands.
