The Singapore-Suzhou Industrial Park was one of the most politically fraught bilateral projects in modern Asian economic history. Launched in 1994 as a flagship China-Singapore government-to-government venture, it nearly collapsed by 1999 when China restructured the management arrangement, reducing Singapore's consortium stake from 65% to 35% after years of friction over governance and competition from a rival Chinese-developed zone adjacent to the park. This coin was issued five years after that restructuring — by which point the park had rebounded sharply, making the commemorative something of a belated vindication.
