Sierra Leone's commemorative coinage of the mid-2000s was largely produced through the Pobjoy Mint under licensing arrangements that had little to do with the issuing nation's own monetary needs — these were collector pieces destined almost entirely for the overseas market. The KM#335a designation indicates the silver variant, distinguished from a base-metal companion issue struck in the same program.
The .9167 fineness is characteristic of Pobjoy's house standard for this period, slightly below sterling.
