Liberia's numismatic program in the 1990s leaned heavily into licensed pop-culture themes as a revenue mechanism — the country had minimal domestic coin demand and used foreign minting contracts almost entirely for the collector export market. This piece was struck under that arrangement, timed loosely to capitalize on renewed Star Trek interest following the mid-decade run of Deep Space Nine and Voyager. Paramount licensing agreements governed the imagery, which is why comparable issues from other small sovereign issuers of the same period are legally distinct despite nearly identical marketing.
