Obverse description Left-facing effigy of Liberty portrayed as a Native American, wearing a large feathered war bonnet bearing the inscription LIBERTY on the headband. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged in an arc along the upper field. The date is prominently incused in the lower exergue. The design, executed in high relief in the manner of ancient coinage, reflects the neoclassical aesthetic championed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the direction of President Theodore Roosevelt.
