The Swallow was one of two vessels — alongside the Cartaret — commanded by Philip Carteret during the 1766–1769 circumnavigation expedition that charted portions of the Pacific previously unknown to Europeans, including the passage later named for him through the Bismarck Archipelago. The Solomon Islands had in fact been lost to European navigation for nearly two centuries before Carteret's passage confirmed their rediscovery. This coin belongs to a broader commemorative program issued by the Central Bank during the 1990s, capitalizing on the international collector market for Pacific exploration themes on crown-sized silver pieces.
