The astrolabe dominated navigational practice for roughly fifteen centuries before being rendered obsolete by the sextant in the eighteenth century. Cook Islands has built a substantial secondary market around high-relief antiqued silver issues targeting collectors rather than circulation, and this piece belongs squarely to that commercial program — produced well after Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, making it one of the first posthumous portrait issues under her effigy from this issuer.
