The Lynx appears in the RCM's ongoing bullion wildlife series, which has expanded considerably since the original Maple Leaf program launched in 1979. Canada's four-nines gold standard — .9999 fineness — was itself a competitive move against the South African Krugerrand, which held a near-monopoly on the gold bullion coin market through the late 1970s until international sanctions eroded its distribution. The RCM used superior purity as its primary market differentiator, a strategy that worked.
