Karl May never visited the American West, yet his novels — written from a Dresden study and partly while serving prison time for fraud — became the most widely read German-language fiction of the 19th century. The Solomon Islands issued this piece under licensing arrangements that place May alongside a long roster of commemorative subjects with no geographic or historical connection to the issuing territory whatsoever.
