Ferdinand von Zeppelin spent decades petitioning the German military establishment before receiving any serious backing — his first successful powered airship flight came in 1900, when he was already 62 years old. The rigid airship framework he patented became the dominant design for military and commercial lighter-than-air craft through both world wars.
This is one of the miniature gold issues produced in bulk for the collector novelty market, struck under Solomon Islands licensing arrangements that have nothing to do with the nation's monetary history.
