Additional information

The Britannia motif has appeared on British bullion coinage since 1987, but its licensing for use by Commonwealth territories on their own issues has generated a crowded field of fractional gold pieces aimed squarely at the collector-investor market. This Solomon Islands issue is one of dozens of such miniature gold pieces struck under similar arrangements, with the Royal Mint's imprimatur lending nominal legitimacy to what are effectively privately marketed bullion novelties with face values bearing no relation to intrinsic worth.
