The jabiru — more precisely the black-necked stork, Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus — is Australia's only true stork species, and its selection for this issue was part of the Royal Australian Mint's Birds of Australia series that ran through the early 1990s. The series drew on growing public interest in native fauna coinage following the enormous commercial success of the Kangaroo bullion program launched in 1989.
