Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Liberty in high relief, her hair elegantly arranged in flowing curls and gathered at the nape with a pearl-adorned queue. Liberty wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY across its band, rendered in the neoclassical style engraved by Christian Gobrecht. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged around the periphery of the field — seven to the left and six to the right — representing the original states. The date appears in the lower exergue beneath the bust, with a plain inner border and reeded rim encircling the design.
