Singapore's Almanac series draws on the traditional Chinese lunar almanac — the Tong Shu — a compendium consulted for centuries across southern China and the diaspora to determine auspicious dates for weddings, burials, and business dealings. The almanac's role in daily Singaporean life was particularly pronounced among Hokkien and Teochew merchant communities who settled the island through the nineteenth century. Issuing a coin around this object was a deliberate nod to that demographic continuity.
Struck to two-troy-ounce specification by the Singapore Mint, the 2014 release opened a themed series rather than a standalone commemorative — a structural decision that committed the Monetary Authority to subsequent annual issues in the same format.
