The 1996 commemorative was issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the Kolpingwerk, the Catholic social organization founded by Adolph Kolping in Cologne in 1846. Kolping, a journeyman shoemaker turned priest, built the network specifically to address the social dislocation of young craftsmen during rapid industrialization — at its peak the organization operated hostels and training programs across much of Catholic Europe.
