Obverse description The German Federal Eagle (Bundesadler) is depicted in high relief at the centre of the field, facing left with wings spread in the stylised heraldic manner characteristic of post-war Federal Republic coinage. The mint mark 'A' for the Staatliche Münze Berlin appears beneath the eagle's talons. The circular legend 'BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND' arcs along the upper periphery, with the date '1994' to the right, while the denomination '10 DEUTSCHE MARK' is inscribed along the lower border.

Reverse description The central field displays a bold allegorical composition consisting of two stylised feathers or flame-like forms intersecting diagonally, symbolising resistance and sacrifice, bound at their centre by a horizontal chain rendered in relief — evoking the breaking of bonds and the courage of those who opposed the Nazi regime. The upper legend 'DER DEUTSCHE WIDERSTAND 1933-1945' arcs around the periphery, commemorating the German resistance movement, while the date '20. JULI 1944' — marking the failed assassination attempt against Hitler — is inscribed along the lower border.

Additional information

This piece was issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the July 20, 1944 assassination attempt against Hitler, organized primarily by Claus von Stauffenberg and a broad coalition of Wehrmacht officers, diplomats, and civil servants. The conspirators planned to invoke Operation Valkyrie — a legitimate emergency protocol — to seize control of Berlin immediately after the bomb detonated. It failed. Stauffenberg and three co-conspirators were shot in the Bendlerblock courtyard before midnight.

West Germany had been slowly rehabilitating the memory of the resistance movement since the 1950s, but public commemoration remained politically awkward for decades given how many former Wehrmacht officers occupied prominent postwar positions. The Bendlerblock itself became a national memorial only in 1980.
