| 表面の説明 | The German Federal Eagle (Bundesadler) displayed in the centre of the field, rendered in the stylised heraldic manner standard to the Federal Republic. The circular legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND arcs along the upper rim, with the date 2000 following to the right. The denomination 10 DEUTSCHE MARK is divided across the lower field, flanking the base of the eagle, with the mint mark G appearing between the eagle's talons. The design is plain and authoritative, characteristic of the Federal Republic's commemorative coinage series. |

Issued to mark the Aachen Cathedral's designation as one of the first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978, this coin arrived some two decades after that recognition — part of a broader West German and unified German tradition of using the 10 DM commemorative series to anchor national identity in cultural heritage rather than politics. The cathedral itself was begun by Charlemagne around 796 AD and served as the coronation site for German kings from 936 to 1531.
2000 was the final year of the 10 DM commemorative program before Germany's transition to the euro rendered the denomination obsolete.
