Issued to mark the centenary of Rudolf Diesel's 1897 patent grant and the successful test run of his compression-ignition engine at the MAN factory in Augsburg. Diesel himself never profited from the invention — he died broke and under suspicious circumstances in 1913, likely by suicide, having signed away royalties and lost fortunes on failed ventures.
The .625 fineness places this squarely in the West German commemorative silver tradition that predates reunification, a specification carried forward unchanged into the unified Federal Republic's program.
