Saint-Brieuc, in the Côtes-du-Nord, housed one of the regional prisoner-of-war depots established under France's 10th Military Region during the First World War. These small-denomination camp notes were internal scrip — prisoners could not use French currency, so the depot system issued its own fractional paper to cover canteen purchases and minor transactions. The 10th Region covered Brittany, and its camps processed a substantial flow of German and Austro-Hungarian prisoners from the Western Front.
Paper scrip at this denomination wore out quickly under canteen conditions. Survivors are almost invariably in poor shape.
