Muhammad VIII al-Amin was Bey of Tunis under French Protectorate when this piece was struck — the zinc composition a direct consequence of wartime metal shortages that had stripped copper and bronze from circulation across occupied and Axis-aligned territories alike. Tunisia had only just passed through the North African campaign, with Allied forces expelling the last German and Italian troops in May 1943.
Paris resumed striking Tunisian coinage in 1945 as administrative normality was reasserted. Muhammad VIII would later become the last Bey and briefly the first President of independent Tunisia in 1957, before being deposed by Bourguiba within a year.
