Hôpital du Mas-Éloi was a French facility designated for wounded German prisoners during the First World War — the parenthetical "Blessés Allemands" in the issuer name makes that explicit. These small-denomination hospital tokens in paper were a common administrative solution across French internment and POW medical facilities: official currency couldn't circulate freely within such institutions, so canteen scrip filled the gap.
The date range extending to 1921 reflects the slow repatriation process; German prisoners were held well past the Armistice as France retained labor for reconstruction work under the peace terms.
