Vierzon hosted one of the larger French prisoner-of-war depot camps during the First World War, and canteen scrip of this type was the standard mechanism for allowing prisoners to purchase goods without handling official French currency. The issuing authority — the Dépôt des Prisonniers de Guerre — operated under military administration, meaning these bons were neither sanctioned nor overseen by the Banque de France. They were internal instruments, valid only within the wire.
Paper canteen scrip from French POW depots of this period survives poorly. Most was destroyed or discarded at camp closure in 1918–1919, and what circulated heavily within the camp suffered accordingly.
