El Salvador's monetary system through much of this period was structurally tied to the colón, introduced in 1919 to replace the peso at par following years of coffee-export instability. The Banco Agrícola Comercial, later supplanted by the Banco Central de Reserva established in 1934, managed coinage policy through decades of agricultural monoculture dependence and periodic fiscal stress.
