A further ring of eight dots surrounds the star, and the entire design is superimposed over a stylized wave or cloud-scroll pattern that fills the field, giving the composition a distinctly Chinese decorative character. Kiangsi's provincial mint was among the more active participants in the late Qing cash coinage surge, but output in the final months before the Xinhai Revolution created significant administrative chaos. Many provincial issues dated to 1911 are difficult to attribute with precision because minting continued under shifting authority as the revolution swept through southern China in October of that year — Nanchang itself fell to revolutionary forces on October 23, 1911.
The Woodward reference places this among documented die varieties for the province, and collectors working the Hsu and ZhouLi concordance will find attribution occasionally complicated by shared obverse dies across provincial issues.
