The Thai Commercial Bank, founded in 1906 as Siam Commercial Bank under royal patronage of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), was the first bank incorporated under Thai law. This commemorative issue marks its centennial — one year late by Western reckoning, but the institution's founding date falls under the Thai solar calendar, which runs 543 years ahead of the Gregorian, placing the centenary in 2549 BE.
