Obverse description A stylized ho-oh (Japanese phoenix) rendered in high relief occupies the central field, depicted in full flight with dramatically spread wings and an elaborately feathered tail sweeping to the right. The mythical bird holds a leafy vine branch in its beak, the foliage extending across the lower portion of the field in finely detailed relief. The design evokes traditional Japanese decorative art, with each feather and scale rendered with exceptional precision befitting a proof strike. The entire composition is contained within a raised beaded border encircling the field.
