Issued as the third in Japan's official series commemorating the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, this coin was part of a fundraising program through which a portion of proceeds supported reconstruction efforts in Tōhoku. The 2011 disaster killed nearly 20,000 people and triggered the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis — the most severe nuclear accident since Chernobyl.
The series ran across multiple years and denominations, with the gold 10,000-yen pieces carrying the highest face value and tightest mintage controls of the program.
