This issue commemorates the 1700th anniversary of the birth of Saint Martin of Tours — born around 316 AD in Savaria, the Roman provincial city now known as Szombathely in western Hungary. Martin is one of the few figures claimed with genuine geographical basis by both France, where he built his ecclesiastical career, and Hungary, which counts him among its most important historical connections to early Christianity. The Magyar Nemzeti Bank has issued several Martin-themed coins over the decades, but this particular release anchors the series to a specific centennial milestone rather than the general hagiographic tradition.
