| 正面描述 | The coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan occupies the central field, featuring the Arabic inscription 'خلق' (Khalq, meaning 'The People') on a stylised rising sun and crescent motif, surmounted by a five-pointed star. The arms are flanked by two symmetrical sprays of wheat ears, their bases joined by a scroll bearing an Arabic inscription. The encircling legend 'DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF AFGHANISTAN' runs along the upper periphery in Latin characters, while the date '1978' appears in Arabic numerals at the base. |

Issued under the Daoud Khan republic in what would prove to be one of its final acts before the Saur Revolution of April 1978 overthrew and killed Daoud — this piece belongs to a short-lived series of Afghan gold commemoratives targeting the international collector market. The Marco Polo sheep (Ovis ammon polii), named by the explorer after his transit through the Wakhan Corridor in the 13th century, inhabits terrain so remote that hunting concessions for the species were, by the late 1970s, among Afghanistan's few reliable sources of hard currency.
