Reverse description Central field bears two vertically stacked Chinese characters 壹圓 (One Yuan) in bold, brush-style calligraphy within an open wreath. The wreath, tied at the base with a ribbon bow, is composed of two symmetrical sprays of olive or laurel branches with finely detailed leaves and buds, curving upward from the lower field to meet near the top. The plain field and the absence of any additional legend give the reverse a strikingly austere elegance. The design is contained within a raised inner rim and reeded outer edge.
