Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Yuan Shikai in military uniform, with epaulettes bearing insignia visible at the truncation, and a moustache rendered in fine detail. Six Chinese characters arranged around the portrait reading 中華民國三年 (Year 3 of the Republic of China), with the characters 中華 to the upper right, 民國 at the top centre, and 三年 to the upper left. The engraver's signature L. GIORGI appears in small Latin lettering in the lower right field. The portrait is executed in high relief in the naturalistic European academic style characteristic of Giorgi's work, set against a plain field within a toothed border.
