Obverse description The state coat of arms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea occupies the central field, depicting a hydroelectric dam and mountain landscape beneath radiating sunbeams, surmounted by a five-pointed star, with sheaves of grain framing the sides and a ribbon at the base inscribed with the state name in Hangul. A circular legend reading '조선민주주의인민공화국중앙은행' (Central Bank of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) runs along the upper periphery. The denomination '1 원' is inscribed at the base of the coin, flanked by decorative leaf sprigs. Additional Hangul inscriptions appear in the left and right fields, and Chinese characters '試作品' (meaning 'trial piece' or 'specimen') appear to the right, suggesting this example is a proof or pattern strike.
