Obverse description Central square hole framed by a raised inner rim, surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform reading top-bottom, right-left: 正 (zhèng) above, 通 (tōng) to the right, 元 (yuán) below, and 寶 (bǎo) to the left, forming the reign title legend 正元通寶 (Zhèngyuán Tōngbǎo). The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) in low relief against a flat field. The outer rim is plain and slightly irregular, consistent with sand-cast production typical of Vietnamese cash coinage of this period.
