Additional information

Antonio Venier's dogeship coincided with one of Venice's more precarious stretches — the War of Chioggia against Genoa had only just concluded in 1381, leaving the city financially exhausted. The tornesello was a deliberately debased small denomination, struck in billon for circulation across Venice's eastern Mediterranean possessions rather than at home, where better coinage was expected.

Biaggi 2857 places this among the later tornesello issues, a series notorious for inconsistent alloy quality even within a single reign.
