Additional information

Wilhelm von Brandenburg-Ansbach served as Archbishop of Riga from 1539 until the archbishopric's effective dissolution during the Livonian War — a conflict that erupted the same year this thaler was struck. The 1558 invasion by Ivan IV fundamentally dismantled the Livonian Confederation, and Wilhelm himself was captured by Polish-Lithuanian forces the following year in a political dispute over the territory's allegiance. Coins issued in his final years as archbishop are consequently rare: the mint infrastructure collapsed alongside the political order that authorized it.
