Aanvullende informatie

Joseph I became Holy Roman Emperor in May 1705 following the death of Leopold I, but the War of the Spanish Succession was consuming the Habsburg treasury at a ruinous rate. Bavaria — whose Elector Max Emanuel had sided with France and was subsequently placed under Imperial Ban — had been occupied by Austrian forces since 1704, and Munich became an Imperial mint operating under direct Habsburg authority. This thaler is a product of that occupation, struck in a city that was politically and militarily subjugated rather than a willing participant in the coinage.

The Munich mint's output under Joseph was limited and the occupation itself lasted only until 1714, making this a geographically anomalous issue within the broader Habsburg series.
