| Obverse description | Draped and armored bust of Emperor Joseph I facing right, wearing a long curled allonge wig adorned with a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon, his cuirass richly ornamented with acanthus scrollwork and a lion's head at the shoulder. The effigy is rendered in high relief in the Baroque style characteristic of the Hall mint. The circular legend reads IOSEPHUS D G ROM IMP SE AV G HV BO REX, separated by dots, running along the inner edge of a finely executed rope border. |

| Additional information |
Joseph I died in April 1711 after contracting smallpox, cutting short a reign that had been consumed almost entirely by the War of the Spanish Succession. The Hall mint — one of the oldest and most productive in the Habsburg system, operating continuously since the 1470s — issued thalers under his name until his death, after which production shifted rapidly to Charles VI types. The KM#1438.2 designation distinguishes this from the closely related 1438.1 by minor die differences in the bust treatment.
