| Opis rewersu | The crowned Norwegian lion rampant occupies the central field, facing left, brandishing a halberd in its right forepaw and grasping a merman or sea creature with its left; the device is set within a beaded inner circle. The mintmaster's initials F.G. appear in the lower field flanking the lion's body. The date 16·58 is divided by the main device and incorporated into the outer legend, which reads continuously around the coin between the beaded border and the outer rim. A decorative mintmark appears at the top of the legend. |

Frederik III's reign opened with Denmark-Norway in existential crisis. The First Northern War (1655–1660) had emptied the treasury, and Swedish forces under Karl X Gustav pushed so deep into Jutland that the Danish mainland was effectively occupied by early 1658. Coinage from the Christiania Mint during these two years was produced under direct military pressure — the mint operating in Norway precisely because Copenhagen's position was so precarious.
The 1657–1658 dating reflects a two-year emission window rather than a single issue, and pieces from these years show considerable die variation, as catalogued separately by Rønning as 44k and 44l.
