The Speciedaler was Denmark's primary large silver denomination throughout the late eighteenth century, its fineness fixed by monetary ordinance rather than market convention — a deliberate policy choice by the Copenhagen treasury to maintain confidence after the fiscal disruptions of earlier decades. Christian VII was by this point entirely incapacitated by mental illness, and the kingdom was effectively governed by Crown Prince Frederik, who assumed formal regency in 1784 following the dramatic council coup that ousted Ove Høegh-Guldberg.
The "second bust" designation distinguishes this from the earlier portrait die, a revision made at the Kongsberg-supplied dies around 1792.
