Carl X Gustav inherited the Swedish throne in 1654 following Queen Christina's abdication and immediately faced the financial burden of maintaining Livonia's garrison towns, including Riga. The solidus — the lowest denomination in the regional coinage hierarchy — was struck in billon precisely because full silver was being reserved for larger military expenditure. These tiny pieces circulated heavily across the eastern Baltic trade networks alongside Polish and Lithuanian issues of similar denomination, which created chronic confusion over valuation that Swedish administrators repeatedly complained about in correspondence from the period.
