Frederik V's reign saw Denmark-Norway operating under Johann Friedrich Struensee's political shadow only a few years after this coin's issue — but in 1764, the more immediate fiscal pressure was the kingdom's chronic shortage of small silver denomination coins, a problem the Copenhagen mint addressed sporadically rather than systematically throughout the mid-18th century. The skilling denominations of this period were struck in debased billon rather than fine silver, making the .562 fineness here relatively high for the type.
Hede 4 pieces from 1764 are among the more frequently encountered dates in the series, though genuine uncirculated survivors are not.
