Obverse description A quartered heraldic shield is centrally positioned over a long cross whose arms extend to the inner beaded circle, dividing the field into four quadrants. The shield bears the arms of Denmark and Holstein in combination, rendered in the late Gothic style characteristic of the early sixteenth century. A circular legend in uncial Gothic lettering runs between the inner beaded ring and the irregular outer rim, reading the royal titulature of Frederik I. The overall composition is typical of Scandinavian hammered silver coinage of the period, with bold, deeply cut die work.
