Carl XIV Johan — formerly Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a French marshal under Napoleon — had been King of Sweden and Norway for less than a decade when this coin was struck. The "thick type" designation distinguishes it from a thinner planchet variant produced concurrently, a production inconsistency that likely reflects adjustments at the Kongsberg mint as it recalibrated copper coinage following Norway's forced union with Sweden in 1814.
