San Marino's gold scudo series of the 1980s was issued primarily for collector export rather than domestic circulation, part of a broader strategy the republic used to generate revenue through numismatic sales — a model it had refined since the 1970s when it began striking commemorative issues in earnest. The 1986 piece carries the "Work" theme, one of a sequence of annual subjects the republic cycled through during this decade.
Friedberg 39 places it firmly within the modern Italian-area gold listings, though the issue's collector-targeted nature means surviving examples are almost exclusively in original mint packaging.
