Additional information

Wolter von Plettenberg was the last Landmeister of the Livonian Order to govern a genuinely independent state. He held the Order together for decades after the catastrophic defeat at Pskov in 1502, negotiated a durable peace with Ivan III, and in 1525 became the only Livonian master ever to receive the title of Imperial Prince from Charles V. These schillings were struck in the final year of his life — he died in February 1535 at roughly ninety years of age, having outlasted every political pressure that should have destroyed the Order before him.
