A continuous Latin legend surrounding the inner circle gives the mint name and date, separated by pellets. Hermann von Brüggeneye served as Master of the Livonian Order from 1535 until his death in 1549, governing a territory caught between the expanding ambitions of Muscovy to the east and the political fractures of the Reformation spreading through the Baltic. The Livonian Order's minting authority at Riga produced schillings in multiple die varieties throughout his mastership, and the flat-corner type with partial lines represents one of the more precisely catalogued die distinctions in this series — Haljak's classification separating it cleanly from the rounded-corner issues struck concurrently.
