1 Rupee - Victoria

The uniform rupee design introduced in 1862 — and carried through Victoria's reign with only portrait updates — was itself a political instrument. Following the 1857 uprising, the Crown dissolved the East India Company and assumed direct governance, and the new coinage was a deliberate assertion of that transfer. Company issues were demonetized systematically, though in practice many circulated in rural areas for years afterward.

Calcutta struck the majority of these pieces; Bombay production is identifiable by a small raised bead below the truncation. The distinction matters for completeness collectors working the series.
