Obverse description Draped and crowned effigy of Queen Victoria as Empress facing left, with a small crown atop her veiled head and hair gathered at the nape of the neck. The legend VICTORIA EMPRESS curves along the upper periphery in Latin script. A fine dentilated border frames the entire design. This portrait, introduced following the Royal Titles Act of 1876 which proclaimed Victoria Empress of India, replaced the earlier legend reading VICTORIA QUEEN on the preceding type.
