Obverse description The obverse bears the emperor's full regnal name and titles inscribed in bold Nasta'liq calligraphy arranged in three horizontal registers across the field, separated by decorative lines. The legend reads 'Sahib Qiran Sani Shah Jahan Badshah Ghazi' together with the epithet 'Jalal al-Din Muhammad', identifying the Mughal sovereign Shah Jahan. A regnal year in Eastern Arabic numerals appears in the lower register. The inscription fills the entire flan, with layout and line breaks varying according to the die used.
